Archie Moore, Kith and Kin, 2024. Chalk on Blackboard, installation at the Venice Biennale 2024. Commissioned by Creative Australia, curated by Ellie Buttrose.
As September came to an end we found ourselves reflecting on a summer of incredible art from Australia. Back in June, we headed to Venice for the 60th International Art Exhibition. We were especially excited as Australia's Archie Moore was this year’s winner of the Golden Lion award with his installation Kith and Kin.
His use of chalk on blackboard was a nod to the materials of education once used in schools and represents Moore's family tree. Hand drawn it unfolds across the pavilion’s walls and ceiling, wiped out areas of the tree echo the fate of many of Australia’s Indigenous peoples. It was a powerful and moving installation, and the gallery assistants confided that many visitors found themselves quietly crying as they contemplated the display.
In the Arsenale, the first paintings to greet you in the international exhibition hall were a series of wonderful bark paintings by Naminapu Maymuru-White. And further along Marlene Gilson (OAM) completed the trifecta of incredible Australian art on display.
