INDIGENOUS ART CODE
The Indigenous Art Code, known as IartC, was set up to establish ethical practices for indigenous Art in Australia. It is supported by the Australian Government and the Cultural ministers council through endorsement and financial support. It was established in 2010 in response to improper and exploitative practices in the industry, including illegal, unfair, and misleading behaviour. It is a voluntary code operated through a public limited company which provides the governance and legal framework to administer the code.
The IartC website is a critical resource for everyone involved in buying, selling or producing indigenous artwork. It provides a comprehensive background on the code, information about how disputes are handled, information for artists and dealers, and offers answers to frequently asked questions. Hopefully it won't be too long into the future when every dealer adheres to the Indigenous Code, so the Artists can feel secure knowing that they are no longer exploited.
